Nirvana Dark And Rich Stout
It’s that time of the year when perfection is sitting in a worn-out pub armchair whilst the snowflakes slowly melt on the window. Thankfully I came across this alcohol-free stout recently so had to give it a try. This dark and rich stout is by Nirvana (I tried their hoppy ale some time back) who are a UK brewer dedicated to alcohol-free beer.
Along with the classic hops, malt, water and yeast, Nivana’s stout has dark roasted malts that take centre stage. They have also used chocolate as an ingredient to amplify its richness and you’ll also get some notes of vanilla.
So the question is, how does this alcohol-free stout stack up against the likes of Guinness 0% or St Peter’s Without? Well, you’ll just need to read the review below to find out.
Is Nirvana Dark And Rich Stout any good?
Taste
This stout certainly has some decadence to it but it’s not as thick and luxurious as the Guinness. On first taste, you can pick out some classic stout flavours like dark malt and bread and there is also a sweet accompanying flavour which to be honest is a bit too much for my palate. I also found this to be a bit too carbonated compared to other non-alcoholic stouts so the texture felt a bit off. Overall was drinkable but personally, I would choose a different brand when it comes to alcohol-free stouts.
Aroma & Appearance
On first sniff, you can pick out malty notes with a subtle background of vanilla. When poured into the glass it has one of the darkest colours of any alcohol-free beer I’ve seen. Very realistic although the frothy head was a bit lacking.
Bonus points
Nirvana Brewing has made sure that this beer is suitable for most drinkers as it s vegan-friendly, gluten-free and has zero alcohol. Calories for this stout are also pretty low at just 20 per 100ml.
