Fruh Kolsch Alcohol-Free Beer
Fruh Kolsch Alcohol-Free Beer is produced by the German brewer Cölner Hofbräu Früh (or Fruh for short). This brewer has been around for over 115 years producing Kolsch beer and creating an impressive reputation within the beer world.
To cater to the increasing demand of alcohol-free drinkers Fruh created a non-alcoholic version of their beer (which I tasted today) along with a couple of non-alcoholic radlers. That said, do you know what a Kölsch is? Probably not, so let me explain – it is a top-fermented, light-coloured but highly fermented, hoppy ale; one brewed according to the German Purity Law of 1516 (must only use 4 core ingredients).
Fruh makes sure its 0% beer retains its flavour by extracting the alcohol once the mixture has fully matured. The question is, is this one I’ll be a regular drinker of? Well, you’ll just need to read the review below to find out.
Is Fruh Kolsch any good?
Fruh Kolsch is actually a really tasty alcohol-free ale. It is quite different to other alcohol-free German beers I’ve tried and you can really taste the sweet vanillary malt flavours with a subtle background of fruits and to round it off … a sour bitter edge. Although it looks light it actually has a decent body with a dry finish.
Aroma & Appearance
Sweet malt and bready aromas invade the nose when a bottle of Fruh Kolsch alcohol-free beer is popped open. As you can see from the photo the ale pours with a light amber look and a low frothy head (retained throughout the drinking experience).
Actually tricky to find dietary info on this beer so I can’t tell you if Fruh Kolsch is suitable for glutens or vegan-friendly. That said I can tell you it is 0% ABV and is fairly low in sugars and weighs in at just 16 kcals per 100mls. If you are interested in purchasing a bottle your best bet is via an online specialist.
