Galactic milk stout

First of all, let us just pause on the name ‘Galactic Milk Stout’ – this drink better be special given its impressive name! Thankfully this alcohol-free milk stout by Big Drop Brewing Co is bang on.

Big Drop Brewing was set up back in 2016 by Rob Fink and mate/entrepreneur James Kindred. Together they have gone on to create some fantastic (and award-winning) alcohol-free drinks. How have they done this you ask? Well, they don’t just use barley but also add rye, wheat, and oats to give their drinks, including Galactic Milk stout, their unique flavour.

Galactic Milk alcohol-free stout gathered momentum when in 2020 it became available in large supermarkets. Since then it’s gone on to not only win awards but has also built up quite a following. See what I thought of this beer below.

Is Galactic Milk Stout any good?

Taste

I’ve had a couple of alcoholic stouts in the past (Black Sheep springs to mind) and the thing to remember is that milk stouts use lactose for sweetness and you certainly notice this with Galactic Milk Stout. On the first sip, you’re struck with a chocolatey hit (from the cocoa nibs) hit before the subtler flavours of coffee and malt begin to enter the foray. I liked the fact this alcohol-free stout wasn’t too sweet, if anything was more bitter than I anticipated. I did, however, find it quite filling and rich and like a Guinness I don’t think I could drink more than one of these at any one sitting. I had it with a bag of smoked almonds which paired well.

Aroma & Appearance

Similar to other stouts Galactic had a musty, smoky, coffee aroma which went well with the flavour. It had really good darkness to it and a massive plus was the head that was achieved; which unlike the vast majority of non-alcoholic drinks didn’t disappear once poured into a glass.

Bonus points

This drink isn’t vegan friendly and does contain a small level of alcohol (just 0.5%) so that may put off some potential drinkers. It also has a fairly high-calorie count compared to other non-alcoholic beers but it is a lot decadent in its taste. Availability-wise you can get Galatic Milk Stout from most supermarket chains and online stores (see below).
