Alcohol-free Super Bock Stout

Super Bock – great name. Great beer. However, does the alcohol-free version stack up? Well, I’ve just managed to get myself a bottle of Super Bock’s Alcohol-free stout (aka Preta) so its time to find out.

For those unfamiliar with this brand of beer its brewed by Portuguese brewer Super Bock and since its foundation almost 100 years ago has become one of Portugal’s most popular drinks.

Similar to other large breweries Super Bock produces their non-alcoholic beers as usual and then goes about removing the alcohol (and even adding back aromas lost in the process).

I’ve had a number of alcohol-free stouts and in the main they’ve been a delight to drink. So the question is was this a SUPER tasty beer or SUPER grim? Well, you’ll just need to read my review below to find out.

Is Alcohol-free Super Bock Stout any good?

Taste

This is certainly a unique tasting alcohol-free stout. There are a bunch of complex and decadent flavours that are hard to pin down but I do get hints of chocolate, coffee, and sweet malt notes. That said there are a couple of factors that let it down including a lack of body (compared to others) and there is also an element of sourness which although not unpleasant is quite surprising. Personally, I prefer the Guinness non-alcoholic stout flavour but this still pretty decent.

Aroma & Appearance

You certainly get a lot of malty, caramel notes when you pop open a bottle of Super Bock. In the glass this drink gets top marks for the darkest beer I’ve ever drunk and as you can see it also pours with a decent frothy head.
