Drink review – Poolside by Big Drop will please most IPA-die-hards thanks to its heady hops combination however I did find the bitterness a tad overwhelming. Still, though, a decent enough non-alcoholic beer to enjoy by the side of a pool!
The last time I taste-tested a Big Drop Brewing beer was over two years ago and it was their Galatic Milk Stout (which incidentally scored pretty well). Now, in 2024 I’ve come across Poolside DDH IPA, their non-alcoholic IPA.
As a reminder, Big Drop Big Drop is a UK brewer set up in 2016. Over the last few years, they have gone on to manufacture some award-winning alcohol-free drinks including a pale ale, craft lager and the one I tried today their IPA
If you enjoy the tangy bitterness of an IPA then Poolside will be one for you. To create an extra hoppy flavour Big Drop uses a unique blend of US hops resulting in some very interesting citrus fruit aromas and flavours.
So, the question is, is Poolside as good as the previous Big Drop beer I tasted back in 2022? Well, you’ll just need to read my review below to find out.
Is Poolside IPA Any Good?
Taste
As I expected, when I took my first sip of Poolside I was hit by a truckload of hoppy flavours characteristic of traditional IPAs. If anything, I found the amount of bitterness a bit too much for me. There is a breakthrough of citrus notes, especially grapefruit but it could have done with a bit more sweetness to help round out the flavour of this beer. Altogether it’s a decent enough beer but one that caters for the IPA-die hards.
Aroma & Appearance
Hops dominate the aromas that are released when you open up a can of Poolside but there also subtle notes of citrus and pine too. In the glass this beer pours with a dark amber colour and a short forthy head.
