Athletic Brewing Free Wave

I had already reviewed two other Athletic Brewing beers (Upside Dawn and Run Wild) before Free Wave IPA came into my lift courtesy of Sober Sauces’s alcohol-free beer subscription.

If you haven’t yet read my other Athletic Brewing reviews they are an American brewer based in Connecticut who have come on leaps and bounds since its founding. Athletic Brewing now offers almost 20 – yes 20! – different alcohol-free beers from pineapple and a sour to a variety of IPA’s including this one I tried today – Free Wave.

Free Wave is a multi-award winning hazy IPA that focuses on Amarillo, Citra, and Mosaic hops to achieve a refreshing and bitter beer. The question is, is Free Wave better than the other Athletic Brewing beers I’ve tried? Well, you’ll just need to read the review below to find out.

Is FREE WAVE any good?

Taste

If you’re searching for an alcohol-free beer that is heavy on bitter hop flavours then Free Wave is for you. The combination of hops that Athletic Brewing uses really does create an impressively sharp, bitter refreshing drink with a body that could hold its own against an alcoholic IPA. In fact, Free Wave is one of those alcohol-free beers that you can offer to a traditional beer drinker and they’ll be shocked it had no alcohol in it.

Aroma & Appearance

As expected your nose is greeted with pungent hoppy aromas with a background of sweet malty notes. Once poured into the glass you get a medium-dark cloudy amber beer with a truly frothy head.

Bonus points

Free Wave follows the same branding format as other Athletic Brewing beers with its cool, simplistic, US landscapes. The beer is vegan friendly and relatively low in calories although it isn’t gluten-free. When it comes to hunting down this beer you’re likely to find it in many supermarkets as well as online specialists (see below).
