Run Wild IPA
In the past, I reviewed one of Athletic Brewing Company’s beers – Upside Dawn, a golden ale. Not going to lie, it wasn’t great – there are a lot of better AF ales out there. Always willing to give people a second chance so I thought I would try their alcohol-free IPA – Run Wild.
Athletic Brewing is a new brewer based out in Connecticut who now have a collection of alcohol-free beers including the IPA I tasted today. They brew their beers using natural ingredients (malted barley, oats, wheat, hops, water and yeast) in small batches. They also have state-of-the-art tech which enables the production of low alcohol- beers rather than removing the alcohol from high strength beers. Finally, to achieve the classic IPA hoppy taste Athletic Brewing use a combination of five different US hops.
So … does this alcohol-free IPA score better than its golden ale sibling? Well, read on to find out.
Is Run Wild IPA any good?
Taste
Well, the good news is that this beer certainly has a bunch of traditional IPA characteristics. Although the bitterness does somewhat overpower other flavours there is a background taste of citrus fruits and toasted grains. The carbonation of the IPA is well balanced indeed and results in a refreshing mouthful. Overall a very tasty, hoppy IPA indeed if a little bitter.
Aroma & Appearance
Run Wild certainly has a punchy aroma to accompany its bitter flavour. You can certainly pick out malt, citrus and pine. When poured in the glass the beer has a cloudy dark amber look and a very forthy head which is a bonus.
Bonus points
Athletic Brewing do create alcohol-free beers that cater to most people. Run Wild is vegan friendly but not gluten-free and has an average amount of calories compared to other AF beers. If you are interested in drinking this IPA you’ll need to check out online specialists as it isn’t particularly available in supermarkets.
