Drink review – When you first take a sip of Road Runner, you get some nice malty notes but then the coffee flavour kicks in and the combination didn’t work for me as it dominated the hop and malt notes. I also found the carbonation a bit lacking too, overall a rather disappointing drink; much better alcohol-free stouts out there.
I do like my alcohol-free stout beers, so when I saw Kehrwieder’s Road Runner alcohol-free coffee stout on WiseBartender’s site I knew I had to give it a go.
Kehrwieder is one of Germany’s new ‘creative breweries’ based in Hamburg that has been creating interesting beers for over a decade. Last count, they had over a staggering 150 different beers to choose from, including the alcohol-free Road Runner coffee stout I tried today.
To create their stout, Kehrwieder combine classic stout ingredients (water, roasted barley, hops, yeast) and then adds locally roasted coffee for extra depth.
The beer then undergoes full fermentation before having the alcohol gently removed, ensuring the deep roast, smooth profile is retained.

Taste
Hmmm, not sure about this one. On first sip, you get some nice malty notes but then the coffee flavour kicks in and the combination didn’t work for me as it dominated the hop and malt notes. I also found the carbonation a bit lacking too, overall a rather disappointing drink; much better alcohol-free stouts out there.
Aroma & Appearance
When you open a bottle of Road Runner, you are hit with some pungent barley, malt notes with a background espresso aroma. In the glass, it has a very dark stout coiour and barely visible frothy head.
