Krombacher Weizen Alkoholfrei

Krombacher is a German brewer who has been producing quality beer for centuries. Originally starting with their famous pilsner beer, they soon created wheat followed by a dark beer. Just like other German brewers they saw that the market for alcohol-free beers was increasing and so was born ‘Krombacher Weizen Alkoholfrei’.

This alcohol-free wheat beer is brewed in a similar fashion to the alcoholic (5.4% beer) version. It uses traditional hops from the Hallertau valley as well as water sourced from the nearby spring (a tradition they have been keeping since the early 1800s). Once the fermentation process is complete the alcohol is removed creating Weizen Alkoholfrei.

I’ve been quite partial to alcohol-free wheat beers as you can see from the scores from other brands so how did Krombacher’s fare? Well, you’ll need to read the review to find out.

Is Krombacher Weizen Alkoholfrei any good?

Taste

Well, Krombacher Weizen Alkoholfrei is certainly one of the sweetest alcohol-free beers I’ve tried especially when you consider there is almost 3g of sugar per 100 ml (it comes in a 500 ml bottle). The sweetness hit does eventually mellow and the more contrasting bitter and tangy flavours of hops and cereal begin to permeate. The level of carbonation works well to balance the bitterness and sweetness in order to create a refreshing and tasty alcohol-free wheat beer.

Aroma & Appearance

When poured into the glass it has a medium amber colour with a good-sized frothy head that doesn’t disappear like other alcohol-free beers. The aroma given off is fruity (I detected banana and citrus fruits) alongside the smell of malt which helped to enhance the tasting.

Bonus points

Although it does have a relatively high sugar content Krombacher Weizen is marketed as an isotonic (sports drink) and it does come with added folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12. It is vegan-friendly but not suitable if you are looking for gluten-free drinks. Compared to other alcohol-free wheat beers it isn’t one of the easiest drinks to find but there are a few online specialists who stock it
