Review – Sober Carpenter has created a tasty alcohol-free IPA beer with accompanying citrus and hop flavours. Sure, there are other high-scoring IPA’s I’ve reviewed but if you do come across this in a pub or a shop then I would recommend giving it a go.
For those who didn’t see it, I recently reviewed Sober Carpenter’s Irish Red Ale which was well received. Sober Carpenter are a Canadian alcohol-free brewer and have created a number of beers including the alcohol-free IPA that I tried today.
The IPA they have created is multi-award-winning (USA beer rating) brewed using citra, simcoe, cascade hops as well as pale, cara malt to create a fruity, punchy refreshing beer.
So is this IPA worthy of a place at My Dry Bar? Well, you’ll just need to read my review below to find out.
Is Sober Carpenter’s IPA any good?
Taste
Well if you’re after a hoppy IPA then this is going to be a great beer for you to try as it certainly has a hoppy taste by the bucket load. Along with hops you get levels of citrus in the background accompanied with a bittersweet after taste. My only grumble is that it did not have the ‘body’ of other alcohol-free IPA’s I’ve had, ie it was a bit light (especially compared to the Irish Red). Still very drinkable though.
Aroma & Appearance
The aroma was typical of a hoppy IPA beer and you certainly get levels of citrus fruit coming through. In the glass, this beer has a cloudy amber look and its moderate carbonation enables a frothy head to form.
Bonus points
Like the Irish Red this beer is vegan friendly but not gluten-free; it is also pretty low on the calorie front at just 11 per 100 ml. The biggest shortfall with this beer is its availability in the UK so you’ll need to do some hunting around if you want to enjoy the wares of Sober Carpenter.
