Drink review – This non-alcoholic wine by Oddbird is a good attempt at a decent alcohol-free red but does miss the mark due to a strange background taste. Still, if you are looking for an non-alcoholic alternative to Merlot then this isn’t the worst wine you could drink.

Oddbird is a non-alcoholic wine company created in Sweden in 2013. The founder Moa Gürbüzer wanted to create a great selection of non-alcoholic wine and since the company’s creation there are now 13 different wines to choose including the merlot/ shiraz blend I tried today.

To make sure the wine is of the best quality and flavour Oddbird take time and consideration in its production including hand-selecting the highest quality grapes producing wine that is aged for 12 months before having its alcohol removed with the latest innovative tech.

This particular Domaine de la Prade uses ecological Merlot & Shiraz grapes which create a ton of dark fruit, rich flavours.

So the question is is Oddbird’s non-alcoholic wine one fit for the table or one fit for the sink? Well, you’ll just need to read my review below to find out.

Is non-alcoholic Oddbird wine any good?

Taste

Well the good news is that non-alcoholic wine is definitely improving in both quality and taste but still has quite a way to and this is reflected in Oddbird’s merlot/ shiraz blend. On first sip, this wine does give you some punchy black-fruit flavours – cherry and rich plum are two standouts. However there is an odd and not entirely desirable background flavour than detracts from the experience. The body is pretty decent and isn’t too watery and the level of tannins work well too. Overall as an alcohol-free red wine is does suffice for a glass … but I won’t be having another.

Aroma & Appearance

This wine does give off a full-bodied red wine aroma especially classic spice and blackberry vibes. In the glass Oddbird’s Domaine De La Prade pours with a dark ruby colour.

Bonus points

This non-alcoholic merlot/ shiraz blend is going to be suitable for most drinkers as its gluten-free and suitable for vegans and those looking for alcohol-free organic drinks. It is also 100% free from alcohol too.  Oddbird are improving the accessibility of their wines but your best bet to find a bottle is via an online specialist.
