Review – Overall, Mockingbird is a pretty decent enough alternative to tequila. I would have preferred it more if it had a bit more bite but you can see the Mockingbird team has spent time creating a unique and interesting non-alcoholic spirit.

Finally, I have procured a bottle of Mockingbird Agave – an alcohol-free tequila!

As a fan of a good-quality alcoholic tequila, I was really curious to see how this well-regarded spirit fared. Created by UK-based Fern McCoy, Mockingbird Agave uses traditional and authentic ingredients that have come over from the town of Tequila in Mexico. In fact, this tequila has the seal of approval, officially recognised as 100% organic Blue Agave.

It took the team many months of research and testing to finally come up with the recipe I poured into my glass. Given the amount of RnD that has gone into Mockingbird it’s no surprise they are keeping ingredients close to their chest. That said they do let on that there is some vanilla (for sweetness), lemon (for the citrus), habanero (for the spicy) and some cinnamon. The most interesting addition to Mockingbird is the use of Ashwagandha. If like me you’ve not heard of it before it is an adaptogen that helps relieve both stress and anxiety and is known to boost the immune system.

I had a shot of Mockingbird with a can of London Essence Blood orange and elderflower tonic and a few ice cubes. So was this alcohol-free tequila leaving me on the hunt for a sombrero or one fit for the cockorachoes? Well, you’ll just need to read the review below.

Is Mockingbird Agave any good?

Taste

Well, the good news it is pretty tasty but if you think this is a tequila alternative which you can neck with some salt and lemon you’ll be disappointed. The taste is much more subtle than traditional tequila. On the first sip, you’ll get hints of lemon and a background peppery/ smoky flavour which helps recreate the classic tequila flavours.  I tried it both neat and with the mixer and would definitely recommend adding the mixer and plenty of ice; very refreshing.

Aroma & Appearance

I was quite surprised by the lack of aroma I thought it would be a lot more citrusy and smokey but it’s actually more herbal/ medicinal. In the glass, Mockingbird has a light wheat look, similar to a traditional tequila.

Bonus points

Mockingbird tequila is going to please the majority of alcohol-free drinkers as it has zero alcohol, is vegan-friendly and ideal for gluten-free drinkers. It is also pretty low in calories (just 25 per 100ml). Availability-wise the best place is either to buy it from Mockingbird’s site or from an online specialist.
