Hawkstone Spa Lager Review

Jeremy Clarkson's wellness lager is an interesting idea, but unfortunately lacks the flavour and body to compete with the best alcohol-free lagers.

Hawkstone Spa Lager Review

Hawkstone Spa Lager is one of the more talked-about low-alcohol beers on the market, largely because of its connection with Jeremy Clarkson and the wider Hawkstone brand. It is positioned as a lighter “wellness lager” rather than a full-strength beer, with an ABV of 0.3%. The branding is strong, the bottle looks premium and the concept is interesting, but the beer itself is less convincing.

In the glass, Hawkstone Spa pours a clear golden colour with lively carbonation and a small white head. It looks like a proper lager, although the head fades fairly quickly. The aroma is clean but quite subtle, with light cereal malt, a little sweetness and a gentle hop note. It smells fresh enough, but it does not have the depth or character of the stronger alcohol-free lagers we have reviewed.

On the palate, Hawkstone Spa is crisp and refreshing at first, but it quickly becomes thin. There is some light malt sweetness, but very little bitterness or body to balance it out. The finish is clean, but also watery, which makes the beer feel less satisfying than it should at this price point.

The positives are that it is vegan friendly, relatively low in calories and easy to drink. However, if taste is your priority, there are much better options available. Lucky Saint, Guinness 0.0 and Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% all offer a more rounded alcohol-free lager experience. Hawkstone Spa is worth trying if you are curious about the brand, but it is not one we would regularly buy again.

Best served:

Hawkstone Spa Lager is best served well chilled, ideally between 3–5°C, in a clean lager or pilsner glass. Pouring it into a glass helps release the light malt aroma and keeps the carbonation lively. It works best as a simple fridge-cold lager for warm days, barbecues or casual drinking rather than as a beer to slowly savour.

Pairing recommendation:

Best enjoyed with classic pub food or lighter summer dishes where its crisp, refreshing profile works best.

Final Verdict

Hawkstone Spa Lager has the branding, story and curiosity factor to attract attention, but the beer itself does not quite deliver. It is crisp, refreshing and easy to drink, but it lacks the body, malt depth and bitterness needed to compete with the best alcohol-free lagers.

The low calorie count and vegan-friendly recipe are positives, and fans of Hawkstone or Jeremy Clarkson may still want to try it once. However, as a regular alcohol-free lager choice, it is hard to recommend when drinks like Lucky Saint, Guinness 0.0 and Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% offer a more satisfying experience.
