Alcohol-free Estrella
Although Estrella beer has been around for decades its had somewhat of a resurgence, especially their alcohol-free beer (first introduced in 2011). Over the years I have enjoyed an Estrella or two whilst holidaying around the Mediterranean but had not tried alcohol-free Estrella until now.
For those unfamiliar with Estrella (or Estrella Galicia to give it its proper name) it is a lager beer brewed in Spain by Hijos de Rivera. Its manufacturing location can actually be found in its name which translates to ‘Star of Galicia’ an area in Spain where the beer is created.
To create Estrella Galicia 0.0 the brewery uses a process whereby the yeast used is only given a short duration to ferment the beer which helps to keep a great malty taste without the alcohol.
So, is this lager a muchos gracias or a no por favor? Well, you’ll just need to read my review to find out.
Is alcohol-free Estrella any good?
Taste
If you are a fan of the original Estrella then you’ll be pretty happy with this alcohol-free version. You get malty and hop flavours that balance out to give a crisp and tasty lager. The one area that is a bit lacking is that it is a bit flat, missing some of the carbonation from the original; still pretty decent though.
Aroma & Appearance
The alcohol-free version of Estrella is certainly very similar to the alcoholic one and on the nose, you can certainly pick out the malt aromas. When poured into the glass it has a light amber colour and as you can see the head is fleeting.
Bonus points
Yes, Estrella 0.0 does indeed have zero alcohol which is good but note that if you are gluten-free you’ll want to give this a miss. Thanks to its brewing presence you can pick up alcohol-free Estrella quite easily in both Europe and the US.
