Sober Carpenter White ale
This is the third Sober Carpenter (a Canadian brewer) alcohol-free beer I’ve reviewed. The previous two beers being their IPA and the Irish red ale, both of whom achieved decent scores. So it was with a level of high expectation that I tried Sober Carpenter white ale.
Sober Carpenter make their Belgian style white ale (or witbier) by combining classic beer ingredients including oats, toasted wheat and Hallertau hops along with exotic Carafoma malt, orange peel and coriander. all these ingredients produce a unique and interesting tasting beer.
So is this award-winning alcohol-free white beer worth a place in your fridge? Well, you’ll just need to read my review below to find out.
Is Sober Carpenter white ale any good?
Taste
As expected, this beer certainly had a unique taste. You can pick out the added ingredients such as coriander and orange but you also get notes of lemon and malt. Carbonation is spot on with a decent body and dry finish, making it a very drinkable alcohol-free beer. Ideally, for me the levels of citrus and bitterness would be increased but it does feel like you are drinking a Belgium witbier (without the alcohol)
Aroma & Appearance
To be honest the aroma isn’t as good as the taste. You can pick out citrus and hoppy elements but there’s an odd smell I can’t quite put my finger on. When poured into the glass it has a cloudy amber look with a small head.
Bonus points
This alcohol-free Belgium white ale is vegan friendly but not gluten-free; it is also pretty low on the calorie front at just 10 per 100 ml. Just like the other Sober Carpenter beers I’ve tried the biggest challenge you’ll have is finding this craft beer in the first place.
