Drink review – Unltd beer is a tasty alcohol-free IPA that is worth trying if you’re into bitter, punchy beers. Full of bitter malts and contrasting citrus flavours Unltd’s IPA makes for a refreshing drink and it went well with my large pack of ready salted crisps.
Unltd is an interesting UK brewer who first came on the scene a couple of years ago. Unltd was actually founded by a chap named Johnny Johnson who stopped drinking alcohol and was frustrated by the lack of drinks on the market that resembled his beloved beer … so he created his own.
The first beer to be released was the alcohol-free lager in 2020 and a year later the Unltd IPA was launched. which is the one I tried today. So how do Unltd create their beers, well unlike others they don’t brew full-strength beers and then remove the alcohol, no, they create an alcohol-free beer naturally. Although Unltd beers contain similar ingredients to other AF beers (ie water, barley malt, hops etc) the drinks are remarkably low in sugar and calories … so you can literally drink ‘unlimited ‘ beers without worrying about hangovers or putting on pounds.
So was this award-winning IPA deserved of a position on the My Dry Bar shelf? Well, you’ll just need to read my review below to find out.
Is Unltd IPA any good?
Taste
As you can expect given it’s an alcohol-free IPA there are going to be strong dominant flavours and Unltd’s IPA doesn’t disappoint. I did get citrus flavours as well as the bittersweet malt but there was an odd after-taste that I couldn’t quite figure out. It wasn’t unpleasant – just odd! Overall though it’s a tasty IPA that increases in bitterness the more you drink. That said, if you’re looking for something a bit mellow, you may want to try out their more mild-tasting lager.
Aroma & Appearance
Malty and fruity (I get lemons and mango) are the aromas that dominate when popping the cap on this IPA. In the glass, it pours with a medium-dark amber colour and has a wispy head.
Bonus points
I think Unltd ticks a lot of boxes for those who have dietary requirements as it’s vegan-friendly, gluten-free, low in sugar, only 0.5% ABV and has added vitamin B12.
