Drink review – Asda has jumped on board the alcohol-free bandwagon with this spirit but I found it too artificial, bitter, and chemically tasting. There are a lot better producers of alcohol-free spirits and botanicals and I suggest you check them out.
Botanicals as an alcohol-free alternative to spirits are all the rage at the moment. A lot of new and exciting brands are getting involved from Lyres and Seedlip but this alcohol-free rhubarb and ginger botanical is from … drum roll please … Asda!
To be honest, when I went shopping in my local (and large) Asda supermarket for non-alcoholic drinks the offering was pretty pitiful compared to the options found in the likes of Sainsburys and Waitrose. But there in all its pink fluorescent glory shone this drink. Let’s face it I had to give it a go and take one for the team! I mixed this botanical with a Indian tonic and ice.
Was it horrific or a welcome distraction, you’ll just have to read below to find out.
Is Alcohol-Free rhubarb and ginger botanical any good?
Taste
Well, it has certainly got some flavour to it. .. unfortunately, it isn’t a pleasant flavour! It’s really chemically tasting, a bit like someone emptied my gran’s perfume drawer into my mouth. To be fair to Asda I could taste rhubarb in the background which was decent enough but the rest was not good and there was an unpleasant lingering bitterness. Apparently there is African ginger in it but I didn’t taste that at all. Thankfully the Indian tonic I added helped to dampen the concentrated taste. Overall not one I would recommend if you’re in the mood for a cocktail!
Aroma & Appearance
It had a super intense smell that matched the garish colour of the drink itself. Obviously, they’ve gone with the intense pink colour given its rhubarb pedigree which is fair enough. I suppose it would look pleasant enough on a bar shelf.
Bonus points
Not much I can give it on the bonus points front. To be fair it would suit a lot of drinkers as it’s vegan-friendly and gluten-free and also very, very low on calories (surprising given its punchy taste). Obviously, availability wise you’ll need to head down to your local Asda for this treat.
The Dry Drinker is a great allrounder when it comes to alcohol-free drinks with a great range of wines, beers and spirits.
