Review – If I’m honest this Tempranillo wine by Win is another example of a non-alcoholic red wine not hitting home. Although the aromas are decent the taste lets it down, especially the strange chemical after-taste.
Oh oh … another bottle of alcohol-free red wine has decided to drop by. Given I’m only just getting over the nightmare that was Noughty Wine my expectations are below sub-zero. This time around this de-alcoholised wine is organic Win Tempranillo.
Win Wines are produced by Bodega Matarromera in Spain and since their conception have created a number of alcohol-free wines including a sparkling verdejo, a 12-month aged tempranillo, and this, their classic organic tempranillo.
The wine is made from Tempranillo grapes and it comes directly from vineyards specifically grown for dealcoholized wines. Win has invested a significant budget into patenting processes (such as their spinning cone method) to help remove the alcohol from wines and retain the characteristics and flavours of the wine. In fact, this is the first time around the wine has had an actual cork in the bottle, rather than the standard screwcap.
So here goes it … is this another alcohol-free wine DFTS (destined for the sink) or one I can finally enjoy with my sirloin? Well, you’ll just need to read the review below to find out.
Is Win Tempranillo Wine any good?
Taste
Oh dear. Oh dear. What on earth is that taste? Unlike the previous red wines I have tried this one does have a semblance to an alcoholic wine but it had an unwelcome and incredibly strange perfumed taste that I simply can’t pin down. Although I did manage a couple of mouthfuls it was pretty grim and wasn’t long before I let the sink finish it off.
Aroma & Appearance
This bottle certainly gave off a collection of interesting aromas from rich red fruits to rustic, organic farmyard smells … so I suppose that’s a plus. In the glass, like other alcohol-free wines, it has a deep red colour.
Bonus points
Well ok this is certainly a lot ‘healthier’ for you than an alcoholic wine. It is low in sugars, organic, vegan-friendly and gluten-free … and I also enjoyed the experience of pulling out the cork.
