Drink review – This alcohol-free dark lager is great. When you take a sip of Model Negra expect tasty dark lager flavours, including caramel and chocolate notes as well as a frothy head. One of the best.
Earlier this month I spent a couple of weeks to enjoy la playa in Mexico. Whilst perusing the local supermarket I noticed quite a few alcohol-free beers I had not yet tried so of course I had to pick them up and give them a go.
As you can see I picked up three alcohol-free cereveza’s including Corona Cero (which I realised I had already reviewed), Tecata 0.0% (which was really bad and best left forgotten) and Model0% Negra – the one I’ll focus on today.
If you’ve not come across Modelo before, they are one of Mexico’s oldest beer brands and have gone on to create some classics including Modelo Especial and Negra Modelo. A few years ago Modelo was acquired by AB InBev and its presence was grown internationally.
Just like many other drinks brands, Modelo realised they need to cater for the sober drinker and rolled out Cero Derada and Cero Negra, the beer I tried today.

Wow. I wasn’t expecting this! Arguably, the top three alcohol-free beers of the year. Really tasty dark lager flavours, including caramel and chocolate notes. It’s not as heavy as a stout such as Guinness but still gives a rather decadent mouthful and it’s perfectly carbonated. Modelo have hit all the right notes whent it comes to this alcohol-free beer.
Aroma & Appearance
Lots of caramel hoppy aromas fill the nose when you crack open a can of Modelo Negra. In the glass, it pours with a dark body and a tight frothy head.
