Reviewing Alcohol-free Drinks in Ghana
SUMMARY
In this article I review a number of different alcohol-free drinks that I found at the local supermarket in Accra including Laziza, De Vina, Royalty Mocktail and a non-alcoholic sparkling wine.
When I first arrived in Ghana I (wrongly) presumed there would be no alcohol-free drinks available. So when I went to the local supermarket in Accra I couldn’t believe the amount on offer. From alcohol-free wine and an abundance of non-alcoholic beers the choice was vast. In fact I recently found out that Ghana has the only alcohol-free bar in W Africa called Eden bar (which I hope to visit soon).
As you can see from the photos below the choice was impressive but I chose four different drinks to try out including Galaxy (an alcohol-free sparkling wine), Laziza 0% (a non-alcoholic fruit drink), De Vina (a non-alcoholic malt drink) and Royalty Blue (a non-alcoholic cocktail).
So the queston is, do any of the drinks I picked out deserve a place at MyDryBar? Well you’ll just need to read below to find out.
Non-alcoholic drinks in Ghana
Laziza 0%
This was the first drink I picked up. It comes from Lebanon and is a non-alcoholic, non-fermented carbonated malt drink.
As expected it was super sweet but there was a decent pomegranate flavour that reminded me of cherry drops.
Score – 68/ 100
Check out all these alcohol-free wines at the local Melcom store.
De Vina Malt
De Vina Malt is a premium, non-alcoholic, carbonated malt beverage.
There are quite a few non-alcoholic malt drinks in Ghana including a very tasty Guinness version.
Overall De Vina malt had some pretty tasty sweet, malty bready flavours and was a decidedly refreshing drink.
Score – 72/ 100
Royalty Saphire Mocktail
This absurdly blue mocktail is produced by Kasapreko.
There are three different flavours to choose from including emerald, ruby and the saphire I tried today which mixes blueberry and peach.
As expected it was an intensly sweet drink which began dissolving my teeth as soon as I took a sip.
Score – 41/ 100
Galaxy Sparkling Apple
This alcohol-free sparkling drink is actually imported from Belgium and is generally drunk at parties and celebrations.
Galaxy is made using natural fruit juice and sparkling water which created a crisp, refreshing drink that isn’t too disimilar to a cider.
Score – 72/ 100
If you are wondering why I am in Ghana, I am currently volunteering at SFLIG volunteers. This is a great experience and highly recommended.
