Drink review – This alcohol-free cocktail was definitely the spiciest alcohol-free drink I’ve ever tried. I was certainly feeling the effect of ‘Afterglow’. The ginger flavour dominates and there is a subtle vanilla taste, but to be honest, it had little in terms of rum flavouring. Essentially its a punchy and refreshing ginger ale.
FreeAF is an interesting brand that recently came to my attention after I saw a can of their spiced rum and ginger drink at my local supermarket.
FreeAF is an alcohol-free drinks company from New Zealand set up over 5 years ago by founder Lisa King.
There are currently three alcohol-free concoctions on offer, including Apero Spritz, Margarita and the Spiced Rumm and Ginger I tried today.
As you can see, all Free AF drinks have ‘AFTERGLOW’ that is their “all natural signature ingredient from New Zealand that makes AF drinks taste like the real thing”. Essentially, they aim to stimulate the same receptors in your mouth that react to chocolate and chilli.
Free AF drinks contain no alcohol, are low in calories, use 100% natural ingredients and contain no artificial sweeteners or adaptogens. Also worth mentioning that a donation from every can purchased goes to the Nelson Mandela Foundation, a great cause.
Khloe Kardashian seemed to be a fan of Free AF drinks but do they deserve a place on MyDryBar? Well, you’ll just need to read my review below to find out.
Are Free AF drinks any good?
Taste
The drink was definitely the spiciest alcohol-free drink I’ve ever tried. The ginger flavour dominates and there is a subtle vanilla taste but to be honest, I got little in terms of rum flavouring. Overall, it was a pretty refreshing alcohol-free cocktail and I did appreciate the ‘afterglow’ but really it just tasted like a spicy ginger ale; paired well with my Thai curry.
Aroma & Appearance
Ginger bubbles popped up in my nose, enhancing the ‘spicy’ effect. In the glass, it poured with a light amber colour.
