How are beers judged?

All entries into the World Alcohol-Free Awards are judged using a blind tasting process. Judges know the category of beer they are tastingโ€”such as lager, IPA or stoutโ€”but they do not know the brewery or brand behind each sample. This helps ensure beers are judged solely on their quality rather than reputation.

Every beer is assessed by a judging team (typically three judges) together with a senior or head judge. Medal-winning beers then progress through additional tasting rounds, with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals allocated after a second assessment. Gold medal winners are tasted again to determine the overall Gold Trophy winner for the category.

Entries are organised into flights of similar beer styles, allowing IPAs to be judged alongside other IPAs, wheat beers alongside wheat beers, and so on. This ensures beers are assessed against appropriate style expectations rather than compared directly with completely different styles.

GOLD winning alcohol-free beers

gold winning alcohol-free beers

Alcohol-Free Awards. These beers impressed the judging panel with their quality, balance and overall drinking experience, standing out in a highly competitive international field.

This year’s Gold medals were awarded to an impressive mix of breweries from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom, highlighting the continued innovation taking place across the alcohol-free beer industry. Styles range from crisp Belgian blondes and traditional wheat beers to hop-forward IPAs and rich imperial stouts, demonstrating that today’s alcohol-free brewers are excelling across virtually every beer style.

The standout performer was vandeStreek Playground, which not only secured a Gold medal but also claimed the prestigious Gold Trophy as the overall Beer Category winner. Alongside it, breweries including Lucky Saint, Force Majeure, Butcombe Brewing, Moersleutel, Haacht Brewery and Zeer Brewing all earned well-deserved Gold medals for exceptional beers that are among the finest alcohol-free options currently available.

Below you’ll find every Gold Medal-winning beer from the 2026 awards, followed by our selection of five standout beers that we believe are particularly worth seeking out.

Gold Medal Winners

๐Ÿ† vandeStreek Playground (Gold Trophy Winner)

Winning both a Gold medal and the coveted Gold Trophy, Playground was one of the biggest success stories of this year's competition. Dutch brewery vandeStreek has built a reputation for producing some of Europe's finest alcohol-free beers, and Playground showcases exactly why. Expect plenty of hop aroma, excellent balance and a finish that never feels watered down. If you're looking for one beer from the 2026 awards to try first, this would be our recommendation.

W.A.F.A judge's tasting notes:

"Pineapple aromas lead to caramel, grapefruit and pine bitterness on the palate, well balanced with sweet malt, leading to a long, bitter grapefruit finish. A fantastic session beer for watching sports at the pub, or for cooling down at a sunny afternoon picnic."[/et_pb_text]

lucky saint German Weissbier

Lucky Saint German Weissbier

Lucky Saint has become synonymous with premium alcohol-free lager, but its German Weissbier demonstrates the brewery's ability to master other styles too. With classic wheat beer aromas, soft banana and clove notes and a smooth, refreshing finish, it's one of the strongest wheat beers currently available without alcohol.

W.A.F.A judge's tasting notes:

"A rich amber pour, with wheat and a textbook sweet note of banana that brings a promise of spicy complexity - a really satisfying beer. A great example of the style that could be enjoyed on its own, or would complement a range of food - think Thai, Vietnamese, shellfish - and all pub snacks."

goram beer

Goram IPA Zero

Butcombe Brewing's Goram IPA Zero proves that British breweries continue to produce world-class alcohol-free IPAs. It offers plenty of hop character while remaining highly drinkable, making it an excellent option for anyone who enjoys modern craft beer.

W.A.F.A judge's tasting notes:

"Notes of marmalade and pine characterise the nose on this dark amber beer, leading on to a palate of caramel, crisp grapefruit and bitter orange flavours. Hoppy pine kicks in providing further bitterness to the finish. An anytime IPA, that would complement any meal - and particularly good for fans of the West Coast style."

motor oil stout

Motor Oil Imperial Stout

Imperial stouts are notoriously difficult to recreate without alcohol, making this Gold medal particularly impressive. Moersleutel has managed to retain the rich roasted malt character, coffee notes and full-bodied mouthfeel expected from the style.

W.A.F.A judge's tasting notes:

"This pours bold and dark, with a caramel head that invites you to give it a good gulp. The liquorice hits you from the first sip, and the complex flavours continue, without too much sweetness. Great at the end of an evening, matched with tiramisu or blue cheese."

force majuere beer

Force Majeure Traditional Blond

Belgium continues to dominate speciality beer, and Force Majeure's Traditional Blond shows why. Crisp, balanced and incredibly authentic, it's an excellent introduction to Belgian-style alcohol-free brewing.

W.A.F.A judge's tasting notes:

"A golden amber hue, with roasted corn notes and a deep, malty character. This would please pilsner drinkers and fans of dark ales alike, and, with that sweetness on the finish, this would be the perfect final beer of a dinner."

SILVER winning alcohol-free beers

silver medalist beers

A Silver Medal at the World Alcohol-Free Awards is still a significant achievement and highlights beers that impressed the judges with their quality, flavour and drinkability. Many of these beers came incredibly close to Gold and represent some of the finest alcohol-free options available in their respective styles.

The 2026 Silver medal winners showcase the growing diversity of the alcohol-free beer market, with breweries from Australia, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States all earning recognition. From refreshing lagers and traditional wheat beers to modern IPAs, stouts and pale ales, the list demonstrates just how much choice consumers now have when it comes to great-tasting alcohol-free beer.

Below you'll find every Silver Medal winner from the 2026 World Alcohol-Free Awards, followed by five beers that particularly stand out and are well worth adding to your shortlist.

One of the most recognisable names in alcohol-free craft beer, Run Wild IPA continues to demonstrate why Athletic Brewing has become a global leader in the category. Brewed with a generous helping of American hops, it offers bright citrus aromas, pine notes and a pleasantly bitter finish that feels remarkably close to a traditional West Coast IPA. A Silver medal is another strong endorsement for a beer that has become a benchmark for alcohol-free IPAs.

W.A.F.A judge's tasting notes:

"A reassuring IPA aroma of pine and citrus, with some marmalade too, and a palate of grapefruit and bitter orange with a malty overtone. Good for matching with fish and chips or full-flavoured cheeses, and the bitter finish will cut through spicy food too."

Naturally hazy with subtle bready malt flavours and gentle noble hop character, it's an incredibly easy-drinking beer that continues to collect awards year after year. Although Lucky Saint's German Weissbier secured Gold this year, the brewery's flagship lager remains one of the safest recommendations for anyone new to alcohol-free beer.

"A full-bodied lager that's well balanced and crisp, with notes of sweet corn and balanced malt sweetness. A classic after-work beer, and would work with all sorts of food too."

goram beer

๐Ÿบ Weihenstephan HefeweiรŸbier Alkoholfrei

Produced by the world's oldest brewery, Weihenstephan brings centuries of brewing expertise to this traditional alcohol-free wheat beer. Expect classic banana and clove aromas, a creamy mouthfeel and excellent balance throughout. For fans of Bavarian Weissbier, this is one of the closest alcohol-free alternatives you'll find to the full-strength original.

W.A.F.A judge's tasting notes:

"A really easy drinking wheat beer with a lightly spiced, clove-forward profile, and additional banana and citrus overtones. This would work so well with Indian dishes, and with picnic food too"

wiper and true non-alcoholic beer

๐Ÿบ Wiper and True โ€“ Kaleidoscope Alcohol-Free

Bristol-based Wiper and True has developed a strong reputation for modern craft brewing, and Kaleidoscope showcases that expertise in alcohol-free form. Its Silver medal reinforces Wiper and True's growing reputation as one of the UK's most exciting independent breweries.

W.A.F.A judge's tasting notes:

"Deep gold colour, with lively carbonation. Attractive nose of piney hops and citrus with good supporting malty weight, some added herbal/beeswax flavours and a fresh, tangy finish. A brisk, balanced, anytime sipper."

heaps alcohol-free beer

๐Ÿบ Heaps Normal โ€“ Quiet XPA

Three Highly Commended Beers Worth Watching

๐Ÿบ Free Wave โ€“ Athletic Brewing Co.

While Run Wild IPA collected a Silver medal, Free Wave also earned recognition as a Highly Commended beer. ๐Ÿ’ก MyDryBar Take

Don't overlook the Highly Commended beers. In a competition featuring some of the world's best alcohol-free breweries, these beers narrowly missed out on medals and still represent excellent choices. In many cases, availability, personal taste and preferred beer style will have a greater impact on your enjoyment than the colour of the award itself.
