I had fairly high expectations for Wingman AF because BrewDog has produced some enjoyable alcohol-free beers in the past. It certainly looks and smells the part, pouring a light amber colour with a short frothy head and releasing hoppy, peachy and citrus-led aromas.
The flavour begins with recognisable IPA bitterness, citrus and tropical-fruit notes. Citra, Mosaic and Talus hops provide familiar craft-beer character, while peach and pineapple flavouring adds a softer fruit layer in the background.
Unfortunately, the body is noticeably thin. The beer feels watery through the middle and lacks the malt depth and rounded mouthfeel found in the better alcohol-free IPAs. It is not unpleasant, and the clean, refreshing finish makes it easy enough to drink, but it never develops into a particularly satisfying beer.
Overall, Wingman AF is a competent low-calorie session IPA with some appealing hop and fruit character. It works as a casual refreshment, but there are fuller and more convincing alcohol-free IPAs available.
