The alcohol-free beer market is evolving fast — and now the next big trend appears to be “functional beer”.
That’s where Outd00r Brewing comes in.
Launched by Heineken this year, Outd00r Brewing is being positioned as more than just another 0.0 lager. It combines alcohol-free beer with electrolytes, Vitamin C and magnesium — targeting people who want something refreshing and social, but also aligned with fitness, recovery and wellness culture.
Rather than pretending to be a craft IPA or premium lager alternative, Outd00r Brewing is trying to create an entirely new category “functional alcohol-free beer”.
This could become one of the biggest trends in low and no-alcohol drinks over the next few years … and probably will result in another section for drinks with added benefits.
What Is Outd00r Brewing?
Outd00r Brewing is a 0.0% isotonic lager launched by Heineken UK in two flavours:
- Original Lager
- Lemon Lager
The drinks contain:
- Electrolytes
- Vitamin C
- Magnesium
…and are marketed towards active consumers, runners, gym-goers and moderation-focused drinkers.
According to Heineken UK, the beer was designed for people who:
- want to socialise without alcohol
- are moderating their drinking
- participate in “run clubs”, fitness groups and wellness-led social activities
- want a lighter alternative to traditional beer
It’s also:
- 0.0% ABV
- gluten-free
- low calorie
Is Outd00r Brewing any good?
That’s the big question.
At the time of writing, we haven’t yet fully reviewed Outd00r Brewing ourselves, so we can’t give it a MyDryBar score yet.
However, based on the positioning, expect something closer to:
- a very light lager
- a refreshing isotonic-style drink
- lower bitterness
- cleaner body
- lighter mouthfeel
rather than a traditional craft beer experience.
Some early online discussion around Heineken’s recent “functional brew” launches suggests consumers are curious but slightly sceptical about whether these drinks still feel like “real beer”.
That’s understandable.
The challenge with functional beer is balancing:
- refreshment
- health positioning
- genuine beer flavour
without ending up tasting like flavoured sparkling water.
Also worth pointing out that Heineken’s alcohol-free beer was pretty average, scoring 62/100 – so I’m hopinh OUTD00R improves on this.
