Drink review – If you are after a fruity, bitter, unique-tasting pale ale then ‘This Is A Thirst Trap Beer’ is for you . If you want something a bit more traditional then this probably is not one for you. Overall though a decent try at making an alcohol-free beer from Merakai.

Merakai Brewing Co, a small craft brewer based in Sussex, UK and founded in 2020 are an interesting bunch. Their name originates from a combination of Mera (a Greek word meaning put your all into something) and Kai (from the word Ikigai, a Japanese concept meaning your life’s purpose). Quite an apt name given Merakai’s aim is to create an inclusive community where they experiment with taste and sensation.

Merakai have created a number of interesting craft beers including an alcohol-free pale ale – This is a thirst trap – which I received as part of a Wise Bartender subscription box I bought.

Merakai produces their pale ale using a spicy concoction of hops (Ekuanot Cryo and Mosaic Spectrum) and exotic fruit purees. The end product has a unique taste and comes in at just 0.28$ ABV We’ve produced a delicious 0.28% ABV beer, perfect for those who want something even lower, that is full of flavour.

So the name may be a bit of a mouthful but the question is, is ‘This is a thirst trap’ a mouthful of beer loveliness?  Well, you’ll just need to read the review below to find out.

Is ‘THIS IS A THIRST TRAP’ any good?

Taste

Well, this alcohol-free pale ale certainly has a unique taste. You get an immediate hit of the bitter hops before the smooth exotic fruit flavours enter the foray. The fruits I picked out are mango and peach but there was a strange background taste I couldn’t quite nail down (perhaps it’s the cryo kick they mention on their site).  It is quite a carbonated beer which is good as the body is a bit light. This pale ale does have a refreshing taste but is a bit too bitter.

Aroma & Appearance

This beer certainly has a pungent aroma similar to other hoppy pale ales. When poured it poured into the glass with a cloudy light amber colour and a short head of forth which soon dissipated.

Bonus points

Bonus points for the branding. Colourful and creative with an interesting mousetrap design – certainly a unique looking can. Merakai’s alcohol-free beer is going to be suitable for most drinkers as it is vegan friendly, gluten-free and one of the lowest ABV pale ales at just 0.28%. Given its low production yield, it won’t be the easiest beer to hunt down although you can get it from a number of online retailers.
