The Good Karma Beer Co was set up in 2020 to cater to the rise in both alcohol-free beers and mindfulness; their mantra being “a culture shift towards a more sustainable, diverse and equal society”. Currently, there are a number of different beers under their folio including a ‘hefeweizen’, ‘black ale’, and the one I am reviewing today ‘Happy Pils‘.

As their name implies, Good Karma isn’t just about the beer, they genuinely want to make a difference and so they directly support environmental restoration and educational projects from the proceeds of beer sales; so you should feel better when drinking it.

Taste

Given what they are trying to achieve around doing good and sustainability I wish I had better news on the beer … unfortunately I don’t, I simply didn’t like it. First impressions were that it was similar to a slightly bitter fizzy water, no body to it at all. It also had a strange sweetness running through it that I couldn’t put my finger on. Not sweet like honey but more metallic/ organic. I am afraid this beer was certainly not for my palette and one I won’t be revisiting.

Aroma & Appearance

To be fair the aroma was marginally better than the taste. Once poured into the glass a malty and fruity smell came through. The colour was like the taste, very light and watery and there was a semblance of a head when first poured but this slowly dissipated.

Bonus points

Ok look I am going to have to award Happy Pils a decent bonus round. For starters, they are doing good for the environment which is a plus. Also, just check out their packaging. Very cool indeed. You can imagine the Beatles cradling these cans in the 60’s. The beer is vegan-friendly but isn’t suitable for gluten-free drinkers. As it is a craft beer it can be tricky to locate (I found mine at the Club Soda popup) but you can buy from alcohol-free specialists.
