Beer is still the easiest alcohol-free category to buy confidently. The gap between full-strength and alcohol-free beer has narrowed enormously, and there are now plenty of options I’d happily put in the fridge for Christmas guests.

If someone normally drinks Guinness, this remains one of the easiest recommendations in the category. It’s familiar, creamy and has enough roasted character to stand up to a big meal.

REAL Sparkling Tea
Best for: People bored of imitation wine
This is where the category is getting interesting. Sparkling tea doesn’t have to pretend to be wine and can work brilliantly as a grown-up food-pairing drink.
A word on red wine: I’m still cautious. Alcohol-free red remains one of the hardest categories to get right. If you’re choosing one for Christmas dinner, go for a bottle you’ve already tried rather than buying six on the strength of the label.
