Just in time for the festive period, here’s an interesting alcohol-free sparkling wine from Cognato.

Cognato (meaning “closely related to”) is an alcohol-free wine company created by David and Adam six years ago. As wine enthusiasts, they looked for a wine that could be enjoyed alongside a meal but avoided the classic alcohol-free association of being too sweet. Since then they have gone on to create four different alcohol-free wines including a rose, chenin blanc and the sparkling white I tried today.

The sparkling wine I tried is made from 100% hand-picked Chenin blanc grapes from the South African coast, resulting in a wine with a fruity and crisp finish. Once it has been produced the wine undergoes de-alcoholisation so its just 0.5% ABV. In addition, the Cognato team are rightly proud of their Fairtrade certification which shows they are being fair and sustainable with their working conditions

So the question is, should Cognato have a place on your Xmas table this year or is it another one DFTS (destined for the sink). Well, you’ll just need to read my review below to find out.

Taste

Well, Cognato is certainly a step-change compared to other sparkling whites. Most previous white wines I’ve tried in the past were too sweet but this had a genuine tannin, tart flavour reminiscent of a Chardonnay. When I took a sip of this I was hit by citrus and earthy notes that were surprisingly refreshing and crisp. The carbonation was also well done and not too gassy. All in all an alcohol-free wine that is more suited to those with an ‘adult’ palate.

Aroma & Appearance

This wine had some punchy tropical fruit aromas when I popped the cork. As you can see, in the glass, it has a chardonnay colour with light carbonation.
