50 alcohol-free drink reviews

Where’s the time gone! I can’t quite believe I have now covered 50 alcohol-free drink reviews … it’s certainly been quite the learning curve.

As someone who came into this with little prior knowledge, thinking Kaliber was the only alcohol-free beer around I have been amazed by a) how much choice is now available b) how popular alcohol-free drinking has become and c) how tasty most of the offerings are.

Given I’ve now had 28 beers, 3 ciders, 4 cocktails, 10 spirits and 5 bottles of wine and remained completely sober I can tell you alcohol-free drinking is quite the adventure!

What have I learned about alcohol-free drinks?

Some alcohol-free categories have nailed it, creating drinks that stand up against their alcoholic equivalent and are treats in their own right. Namely, this is the beer category. From ales and lagers to IPA’s and stouts there have been consistently high scores. Sure, there have been a couple of misses but on the whole non-alcoholic beers are a great way to drink and enjoy a beer without the repercussions.

The alcohol-free spirit category has been quite hit and miss. There are some spirits that have scored extremely highly but also examples where they fell well  off the mark. The non-alcoholic premixed cocktails though have been generally high scoring and blew my expectations in terms of how similar they are to alcoholic cocktails.

Unfortunately, the category that has left me still on the hunt for a truly good example is alcohol-free wine. They have been consistently low scorers and to be honest, most have been destined for the sink (DFTS). Appreciate that when removing alcohol from wine it goes through quite the process which impacts flavour, texture and body but I am hoping I’ll review a decent offering soon.

I have also been pleasantly surprised by the number of craft brewers and boutique producers that have come to light over the past few years. These companies are reinventing alcohol-free drinking, discovering great combinations of flavours and experimenting with new ingredients to create unique and refreshing drinks.
